Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg
Is it possible to extract oil from rocks? The Achensee people know how, specifically the Albrecht family from Pertisau. At the Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg visitor centre, you can immerse yourself in the everyday lives of shale oil miners and learn how Tiroler Steinöl® is mined. It was Martin Albrecht senior who discovered shale oil. In 1902, the passionate mineral collector found the first oil shale at Lake Achensee. He excavated the mineshaft "Mariastollen", mined the oil shale by hand, heated it, and successfully extracted Tiroler Steinöl® for the first time. To this day, not only Tiroleans but people from all over swear by this precious elixir, which is used in skincare products for its soothing, nourishing, and healing properties. It is also the star ingredient in wellness treatments in many of the region's hotels.
At the Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg, designed like a glass mountain, you can explore the success story of the Albrecht family. The audio-visual tour begins in the Vitalberg shop. Inside the museum, original tools are on display, and a film lets you delve into the world of shale oil distillers. The Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg visitor centre offers special guided tours suitable for children aged 4 to 12 years. The legend of the giant Thyrsus is told in an entertaining and child-friendly way, making it an amazing experience for children. The café on the upper floor is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Enjoy hot drinks and cakes in the afternoon and round off your day with a cool drink at the bar under the starry sky. All parts of Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg are wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
