Hiking programme Achensee

Connect with nature, explore the local flora and fauna, and enjoy panoramic trails: In the summer season, Lake Achensee runs a free hiking programme for visitors. Every week from Monday to Friday, you can take part in our guided hikes with your AchenseeCard.
 
A huge network of marked and well-maintained hiking trails offers everything a hiker’s heart desires: From family jaunts and easy strolls into the Nature Park Karwendel to challenging mountain routes, there is something for everyone to enjoy. In addition, visitors can join our guided tours in summer with our knowledgeable guides sharing interesting information about your holiday destination and its history. The diverse range of hikes will satisfy herb and nature enthusiasts, summiteers, and pleasure hikers alike.

The Achensee hiking programme took place from 29 April to 01 November 2024. The participants look back on an unforgettable time.

Guided herb walks

From 29 April to 24 June 2024, join our guided herb walks in the Nature Park Karwendel and discover some of the beautiful plants that grow around us. As we walk along, the guide explains the properties of these plants and we’ll also try some samples.

Exclusive ranger-guided nature walk 

From 1 July to 28 October 2024, we will explore the area surrounding the Gramai Alm mountain hut. Join our guide on this discovery tour and learn about the history and geology of the Nature Park Karwendel and the daily work of the rangers. We will also search for animal tracks and watch chamois with a spotting scope. This hike is a great opportunity to discover the Karwendel mountains.

From 30 April to 29 October 2024, we walk to the biomass cogeneration plant and follow the forest path (natural toboggan run) to the Adlerhorst (1,230 m). After a short ascent, we arrive at the panorama trail leading to the Zöhreralm mountain hut (1,334 m). At the Gourmet-Alm mountain hut, we stop for refreshments and enjoy the splendid view of the valley and the lake before following the track downhill to the starting point.

From 1 May to 30 October 2024, the Karwendel Nature Park rangers will take us on a discovery tour to the Feilkopf mountain (1,562 m). Equipped with Swarovski binoculars, we will explore the alpine flora and fauna. The lowest panoramic mountain in the Achensee region offers spectacular views over the lake and the surrounding peaks. On our way back, we will stop for refreshments at the Feilalm.

Nature watch tour to the Moosenalm

From 2 May to 27 June 2024 and from 10 to 31 October 2024 the Karwendel Nature Park rangers will take us to the romantic Unterautal valley and to the Moosenalm (1,495 m). Equipped with Swarovski binoculars, we will watch marmots, and with a little luck we will catch a glimpse of chamois and ibexes at the Schreckenspitze mountain. We will stop for refreshments at the Gföllalm mountain hut.

Excursion to the Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil) distillery

The exclusive tours to the shale oil distillation facility in the Bächental valley occur from 4 July to 3 October 2024. From the car park at the Christlum lifts, we walk through the Unterautal valley up to the Gröbner Hals (1,650 m). We enjoy the stunning view of the Nature Park Karwendel before descending to the Steinöl surface mining site. There will be refreshments available before the exclusive guided tour through the distillation facility. Afterwards, we travel by bus back to the starting point via the Sylvenstein reservoir. The hike is easy to intermediate, however some endurance is required.

  • Meeting point: 08.45 at the bus stop in the Christlum parking area, bus stop: Achenkirch Christlumlifte
  • Return: Ca. 16.30 at the Christlum parking area, bus stop: Christlum - Achenkirch. The bus continues to the Information offices in Achenkirch and Pertisau and to the Welcome-CENTER Achensee in Maurach
  • Costs: The fee for the bus transfer from the Bächental valley is EUR 10.00 per person
  • Duration: ca. 6.5 hours
  • Length: ca. 8km

From 3 May to 1 October 2024 the guide will take us on a challenging full-day hike to a summit in the Karwendel or Rofan mountains. Tours will start at the valley or mountain stations of the Karwendel and Rofan cable cars. We will select our destination depending on weather and trail conditions. Tour suggestions are welcome.   

  • Meeting point in May, July, and September: 09.30 at the valley station of the Karwendel cable car in Pertisau 
  • Meeting point in June, August, and October: 09.30 at the valley station of the Rofan cable car in Maurach (bus stop Maurach Rofan Seilbahn)
  • Duration: ca. 6 hours
  • Length: ca. 7km

Good to know

  • Packing list & prerequisites: For all tours, sturdy boots (ankle-high hiking boots) are essential. Please bring weather appropriate clothing. Telescopic hiking poles are recommended. All tours require sure-footedness and an adequate fitness level. We assume no liability for any accidents or damages. Please note that the daily programme is subject to change at short notice due to the current weather situation. For larger groups of people or travel groups we will be happy to organize a certified mountain or hiking guide.
  • Cost: The Achensee hiking programme occurs daily from Monday to Friday and is free for all visitors with a valid AchenseeCard (without AchenseeCard tours cost EUR 29 per person). Additional costs, such as cable car tickets, toll charges and parking fees are not included.
  • Registration & group size: Tours must be booked in advance to guarantee participation. Please register no later than 20.00 the day before the respective tour online at the Achensee experience shop. Group size: maximum 15 people!
  • Tip: Many of our mountain and hiking guides hail from the Achensee region and know the area inside out. They are both mountaineering experts and qualified guides for your tours in the Achensee region. Feel free to contact the local mountain guides directly to book hiking tours. 

 

Additional tours: Golden eagle walks & sunrise tours

In addition to the weekly programme, the Nature Park Karwendel offers ranger-guided tours into a populated golden eagle territory. The Karwendel has the highest population of golden eagles in the wild, and visitors can expect spectacular sightings. Early risers will enjoy the sunrise hiking tours to the Austenau Alpe, where a delicious mountain breakfast awaits.
